The Ghost

(Adapted from a Zen story)

Dr. Mala Sinha

Ramanand loved his young wife very much, but she was sick and about to die. She told her husband “ I love you very much. Don’t ever leave me. When I die do not marry another woman. If you do then I will become a ghost and torment you.”

Soon the young wife passed away and Ramanand was grief stricken. He did not marry another woman, but after three months he met and fell in love with another woman. Soon they were engaged and to be married.

Immediately after this a ghost started coming every night to Ramanand and blamed him for breaking his promise. The ghost would describe in detail every thing that Ramanand had done through out the day.

In fact the ghost would repeat every conversation and describe in detail all that transpired between Ramanand and his new sweet heart.

Ramanand lost his sleep and was extremely worried. Some one advised him to go and met the wise man who lived on top of the hill.

Next day Ramanand trudged up the hill and told his story to the wise man. After he finished describing his woes ,man replied, “ Your wife has become a ghost and knows everything you do. She is a very competent ghost, as she never misses any detail of your life. You should admire such a ghost.

Next time she appears praise her for being clever enough to know every thing about him, then strike a bargain with her. Ask her to answer one question that you will ask and tell her if she answered correctly you will break your engagement with your new sweet heart.

“What is the question”, Ramanand asked the wise man .

The wise man relied “ When the ghost comes take a large handful of rice in your fist and ask her to tell how many grains you have in your hand. If she does not answer then you will know she is a fiction of your imagination and will not trouble you after this.

Next day Ramanand waited eagerly for the ghost, and when she arrived Ramanand flattered her and told her that she was very wise and knew every thing.

The ghost was pleased told him that she knew all about his visit to the wise old man .

“ Since you know so much”, said Ramanand , tell me how many grains of rice I hold in my hand.”

There was no ghost to answer the question.

QUESTION

Was Ramanand cured of the ghost? Why ?

5 Starwell ghost is in the mind
5 StarYes, Ramanand should get cured. Ghost is in Ramanand's subcausious mind thats why ghost knows everything that Ramanand knows. Ramanand himself did not know the no. of grains then how would the ghost know that.
5 StarThese things happened only in dream. One must avoid and be positive always to achieve your gaol
5 StarActually there was no ghost.Ramanand had broken his promise of not marrying after his wife's death, so he was guilty and started perceiving the ghost of his wife. he himself new the whole day activities which he thought are being narrated by the ghost. But the handful of rice was something which he himself was unaware thus even the so called ghost was not able to answer the question. thus he was cured of the ghost as the ghost was in his mind because of the guilt feeling of breaking the promise.

5 StarFEAR is nothing but False Evidence Appearing Real. The ghost was a false evidence of his promise that appeared as a ghost to Ramanand. When his mind understood that the evidence was a fiction his fear went off. So He should have got cured... sundaram@exemplarr.com
5 StarWell yes he was cured, but not of the ghost, but of the illusion he had in his mind. The very thought that his wife had planted in his mind before dying, had taaken shape of a monster when he broke his vow.The wise man was just a medium which helped him think positively and get rid of the ficticious monster-from pinkybasak.hr@gmail.com
5 Starramanand knew that he has broken his promise knowingly that is why he started getting afraid of his wife after her death, because our heart & soul is always aware if we do something wrong and our subconscious mind is always afraid of its consequences. Secondly Ramanand got cured because again he was mentally prepared that the ghost will never be able to tell the number of grains in his fist, so he got no answer as there was no ghost at all, it was all in his mind. We are what we think.
5 StarNo.... As there was no ghost.... it comes out of hallucination, as he loved his wife very much and beleived in everything she said. however, only he knew what he did all day, which the ghost described to him everyday and when he asked the ghost about rice, he wasnt aware about the answer himself. similar to the situation of Munnabhai in Lage Raho Munnabhai
5 Starits dual personality mentality, in one part of his mind it was set that he had promised his wife, for which he is answerable which is y he had to cure / change his mental status
4 StarGhost was nowhere but in the subconciuos mind. Once a person get confident that he can win over the fear of his own mistake can defeat anybody
5 Star Ramanand sb concious itself Ghost.Even Ramanand, he himself not knowing, how many grains he hold on his hand ,definitely ghost may not aware. Thereafter he would have not got disturbed by the Ghost. Even we may have inner ghost it will raise up when we are weakerand if we give chance. With regards SS Kumar ,

5 Starsandevpan@yahoo.co.in. Yes he was cured as the ghost was creation of his ignorance and died when there was dawn of true knowledge
5 StarI am sure that we must have seen Munnabhai MBBS,he know about mahatma Gandhi ,saw him and spoke to him, because his brain created this image , schizophrenia or in his words 'chemical locha',It was Ramanand's thought and guilt concious ness that did not allow him to move on.He was cured of the ghost as he was able to overcome his internal thought and belief in the ghost. The belief was shattered because of the question,so was the ghost. P.S. Believe and you can win anything. Regards- Abhi Abhilearning@gmail.com

5 StarIn a mirror we find a reflection of our appearances But in heart we find a reflection of our soul. So he was doing something which he was not supposed to do. Therefore he was so frightened. Thus we must not do what we are afraid of as i say that We must not do anything we don't want others to know about. Yes Ramanand Must have got cured because the fear of the ghost passed away and he got his lost confidence.
5 StarThere was no Ghost of his wife , it was manifestation of Ramanand's subconcious thinking , which his concious mind took as Ghost and whatever activity he was doing, was narrated by his subconcious mind in the form of Ghost , so when he himself did not know exact number of grain particles , his subconcious mind could not project the answer and he was cured . So moral of the story is to have control on your subconcious mind , which is like a field , reap what one sow .rameshkumarsharma2003@gmail.com.Those who have commented would not have done so, have you not projected the image of 4 GB pen drive . Keep it up
5 StarExcelent story to bring out the ghost within. Our inner concise keep reminding us of all good and bad acts, as per pour belief, we do in day to day activity and are part of our dreams and ghosts we come across. Ramanand was cured of the Ghost and Ghost could not answer the question and ramanand will no more be afraid. It was his love and love of his wife that was bothering Ramanand as he had feeling of betraying his wife. had ramanands wife love so pure would ahve asked his husbank to look for a good life partner to lead a happy life. Thus it was good that ghost was moved off satendrar@yahoo.com
5 StarYes, He Got cured.Ghost was appearing to him due to halocination, it was in his mind since he thought too much about it..well the ghost knew everything about him cause it was in his mind.the ghost couldnt answer the question cause he dint know the answer-from nievasu@gmail.com
3 Starlittle fear is always good, but if the fear is eating you as in the above case you should kill that fear which is in us in our subconscious mind. np_murali@rediffmail.com
5 StarThis Ghost was only Ramanand's imagination. She knew all the answers which he knew about himself. As he himself did not know the answer to the question about the no. of grains, there was no answer and hence no ghost. manohar@birlasunlife.com
5 StarRamanand beleived in Ghost. The wise man helped him to find the truth that Ghost only existed in his mind and not in reality. The moment the limiting beleif was replaced with truth, he was cured. The readers must learn a morale from this story that one should discover thier limiting beleifs and replace it with truth so that they can live with a sense of freedom. 5 StarRamanand was feeling guilty of breaking promise with his wife and at the night when he was sleeping, he was feeling as his wife has came to remind him of his promise, whereas it was just his guilty feel and nothing else. Wise man knewing that this is his guilt feel that has taken the shape of ghost, he advised to ask the question to the ghost, and since Ramanand himself was not knowing the answer, he came to know that there was no ghost at all, it was his guilt feel and he cured of it.

4 StarThis was actually internal guilt of Ramanand as he was not keeping the promise he made to her dying wife.Since Ghost was Ramanand imagination,so all te happenings of the day was described by Ramanands self created ghost in his subcausious mind.Wise man played very intelligent game as even ramanand didn't know the number of grains so obviously there was no answer from ghost and ghost disappeared. In this way wise man cured Ramanand. 4 StarRamanand is guilty that he has broken the promise given to his wife - so he has a feeling of guilt in his subconscious mind that she has come as a glost.

5 StarSame Story as Lage Raho Munnabhai able to see Mahatma Gandhi and does Gandhigiri over Radio
5 StarYes, Ramanand was cured of the ghost. Our thoughts rule our mind at all times. The ghost was nothing but his subconcious mind that wanted to relive life once again kept governing his conscious. Guilt of doing something he had promised not to do also played on his though process. When he was finally able to fearlessly face his inner self, then the ghost vanished. He now no longer felt guilty of his actions.Like they say it's all in the mind! pen2pari@gmail.com
5 StarThis is like Munnabhai M.B.B.S Case.

5 Starthe ghost was just a hallucination and he defeated it psychologically. That very satisfaction drove away the feeling about the seemingly ghost.
